Lifestyle changes

Everyone can benefit from positive lifestyle changes, so whether you are a risk of developing high blood pressure (prehypertension) or you already have it (hypertension) there are certain changes that we can make in our everyday lives that will help to reduce it.

For those of you with prehypretension, your systolic pressure or high number ranges from 120 to 139 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and those of you with diastolic pressure or bottom number will range between 80 to 89 mm Hg. It is very likely that the doctor will prescribe medication to control you blood pressure but he or she will most likely also advise you to make certain lifestyle changes too. Doing this will not only reduce or eliminate your need for medications to control your blood pressure but may also make you feel better. The list below is some examples of the changes that we can make in order to reduce our high blood pressure:

  • Give up smoking
  • Pay attention to what you eat, make sure that you eat healthily by incorporating more fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products into your daily diet. Pay special attention to your salt intake and be sure not to overdo it!
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Try to get 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least 3 times a week.
  • Pay attention to how much alcohol you consume on a daily basis, the guideline is 1 drink per day for women and 2 drinks per day for men. This does not mean you have to drink everyday!

If you have prehypertension and are otherwise healthy, you most probably won’t need to take high blood pressure medication. However, if you do have prehypertension and suffer from either diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease, your doctor may prescribe antihypertensives.

One thing is certain:  It is vital to keep those Blood Pressure Numbers in check and not allow them to reach level where you are risk of high blood pressure complications.
